Re-Marking

Teaching staff have the responsibility to provide students with a clear process for requesting a re-mark prior to the commencement of teaching.

To request a re-mark the student must have first discussed their concerns with the person who marked their work. Students have the right to request a re-mark if:

  • they believe the explanation for their mark is unsatisfactory or
  • that the mark was arrived at incorrectly.

Applications for re-mark of assessment should be discussed with the Unit Coordinator who may arrange the re-mark and choose the person to undertake it.

If the request for re-mark is denied by the Unit Coordinator you may write to the School Dean for approval. This request should include the students’ justification for the request.

Students must formally initiate the process for a re-mark within 10 working days of when the marked work was received and prior to the deadline of appeals for final unit results.

Re-marks must take place on a clean copy of the assignment as submitted.

Grounds for requesting a re-mark include:

  • the mark for the assessment activity was not based on the published marking guidelines;
  • demonstrated bias affecting the assessment activity; and
  • demonstrated wrong advice from staff teaching the unit.

The following are not valid grounds for a re-mark:

  • The objectives of the unit.
  • The assessment methods approved for the unit.
  • The standard required to achieve a particular mark in the unit or assessment activity.
  • A study overload.
  • Personal and medical problems, which normally should be dealt with by deferred assessment.
  • Financial implications of not passing the unit.
  • Grades received by the student in other units or other assessment activities.
  • The amount of work the student has done.
  • A penalty imposed for plagiarism in accordance with University Policies.
  • The need for additional marks to achieve a particular grade.
  • A penalty imposed for late submission in accordance with advice published in the Unit Information and Learning Guide.

NOTE: If applications are successful the re-marked result will be the officially recorded result for that assessment activity, whether it is higher or lower than the original mark. Any piece of work can only be re-marked once.
